MY UNCLE

My Uncle
He was a hard man on the outside, hard as one could be
But deep down in his heart
A soft spot there would be
This man was someone who always had the time
To listen to the young people
And try to steer them right
Ole he would set and fish for hours
As time crept by so slow
And hunt them Northern whitetails, in a blinding snow
He would trap them raccoons in the daytime
And him and old Dan would hunt them by the light of the moon
And how he loved the sound of them beagle dogs
Hot on the trail of a cottontail running through the snow
Well as I set here and think back of all the game that this man got
I would have to say that he was a dam good shot
Some that he made was luck
But to him it was a thrill, for he would laugh and look at you and swear it was pure skill
This man he loved his dogs for there was several in his life
And each time one of them died, he would set and cry
But one I can recall, was a patch beagle hound old Boss the best one of them all
Old Boss would chase them rabbits,no matter where they would go
And on this mans face, there would be a glow
The stories he would tell us are ones we won’t forget
And you could bet your bottom dollar old Boss’s name would be said
And in his hunting jacket was a hard pack of Marlboro Reds
And in his hands a Remington shotgun, across his chest a leather strap
And a pure breed beagle dog setting in his lap
Ah we set and think about all of the days of old
And then Jesus came and called our Uncle home
You can bet when he got to heaven and through the gates he did stroll
I can see him now our Uncle and his dogs
Man how we would like to talk to him,no one will ever know
We should have took the time, before he left us so
But when the moon is low and the wind begins to howl
Across our faces, you will see a smile
Yes we will go outside and look up in the sky
And we will get a lump in our throat, and a tear in our eyes
For we know one thing that its hunting time
Ah that’s not the wind a howling, that’s one thing we do know
IT IS OUR UNCLE AND HIS BEAGLE DOGS PUTTING ON A SHOW
